Vietnam visa for Chinese

Hello
I want to visit Vietnam with a chinese friend; as far as we know, China  would not allow chinese people to exit the country without a valid visa  already granted.
If so, that excludes the "approval letter + visa on arrival" Procedure.
What is your experience with chinese visitors?
